Guideliner Blog Page

Well its a rainy November evening in York and thoughts turn to the season past and dreams for 2009. Firstly my thanks to all who have joined us this year we hope you enjoyed your holiday with us and we look forward to meeting again in the future. For those who are regulars to the site you will notice a number of changes over this year, the web site being one of them. I feel a web site linked to this type of business must be alive and as I get used to working with it I will be able to update this page whenever I can get a decent mobile internet signal. I certainly welcome inputs from the readers and also from our guests who may want to publish anything on the site.

The Seaplane

As always the biggest factor on any holiday is the weather and yet again we were portrayed as having a poor summer. Wrong! The weather was excellent. We managed 3/3 to St Kilda and enjoyed a peaceful Sunday in Stornoway on the last 12 day cruise taking in the inner sound and the Shiants on the way.
As always the 12 day trips to St Kilda are always popular so much so that I have built in an early 12 day for 2009. Quite often it takes a few days to relax and unwind which then gives plenty of time to sit back relax and enjoy the cruise, scenery and wildlife.

This was my first solo season at the helm and Caron has been a fantastic crew mate and friend, she produced the best food I have eaten for many years and for those of you that know me I started this season as a mere 10 stone. Fortunately I managed to increase my weight in time to take to the sea - without a wet suit! Judging by the excellent comments in the journal I hope Caron can sail with me again next season. I am also trying to get a new cooker!

The Monachs are a very special place and we always try and visit them on the way to and /or from St Kilda. Yes you can just sit on this sandy beach and relax. The first views of St Kilda are always exciting here we are a couple of hours out.

Gannetts are a most spectacular sea bird. Fantastic aviators!

Dolphins provide a spectacular escort. In this case they stayed for 45 minutes. They never got bored and neither did we.

These magnificant sea mammals always bring a smile no matter how many times we see them. Dont forget to get yourself forward as quick as you can. Take a tip from Caron she always got there first.

A fantastic year for basking sharks. We counted 16 in one feeding line and some very close encounters. A big whow! factor

I have decided to change our cruise schedule. We now do 3, 5 and 12 night cruises. We will meet at 2pm on Saturday and sail as soon as we can. I hope this arrangement will assist those who travel by public transport and it also means we get more out of the cruise.

The boat is on the hard stand at DRB Marine. This meant a taking the boat through the Crinan canal. A really enjoyable trip. My thanks to Chris for helping with the lock gates. Why not join him on one of our Photo trips next year.

I have found that popping in to Tobermory on the penultimate night is a popular choice for our night off on the 12 night cruise. It gives easy shore access and a greater number of places to eat. I also dont mind popping in on request on the shorter cruises.

The wildlife this year has been fantastic with some excellent sightings of Golden and sea eagles I will upload the photos as soon as I can.

I now look forward to a winter of painting. I am contemplating altering the colour of Guideliner to a slightly darker shade of green. The cabins are also due for decoration so I am sure any of the regulars will be pleased with the facelift. I welcome any suggestions you have so please get in touch. I have had an enjoyable and fun season, I am really looking forward to 2009 and more spectacular wildlife.

Thanks to all who have sailed with us this season. Please keep an eye on the web site and keep in touch.
