Photo Gallery - Seals

There are two species of seals that are common in British waters: the grey or Atlantic seal and the common seal.

On the west coast of Scotland grey seals are usually found in the quieter less frequented areas, such as off lying islands and reefs. They seem almost impervious to rough and wild seas and can often be seen bobbing amongst the seething and tumultuous seas. They are a delight to swim with and exhibit a really curious nature.

They will come right up to visitors to have a good look!!

Otherwise they are pretty easy to approach on land simply being slow and quiet. They breed on the reefs and islands from late September, so we are usually not around to disturb them during this sensitive period. Their pups are born on land and stay there for some weeks being regularly fed and attended to by their mothers.

On the island of Mingulay (one of the islands to the south of Barra) the grey seals spend a considerable time on the soft sand of the beach there.

They will again come right
up to the dinghy to see
what the humans are up to!!

In contrast the common seals are found near most harbours and on lots of inshore reefs and small islands. These are the seals that holidaymakers are taken to sea on "See the Seals" boat trips!

The common seals love to lie out of the water and take shelter from the cold and wind.
