Photo Galleries - Basking Sharks

Photo Gallery - Basking Sharks

Basking sharks are the subject of a considerable amount of research at this time. Although quite a lot is known about their summer activities, knowledge of where they go during the colder months, and details of their breeding behaviour is still very sparse. During the last few years they seem to be steadily increasing in numbers. In fact in 2003 we often saw groups of mare than twenty including many juveniles, which is very encouraging.

We see them once the water starts to warm up enough to encourage algal blooms - usually around about the beginning of June, with numbers reaching a peak within the following six weeks.

It is relatively easy to approach feeding basking sharks, although the greatest care is needed to ensure the animals are not disturbed.

However in the right conditions it is possible to get into the water with these large fish and spend some time watching them feed at close quarters. Provided no sudden movements are made, the basking sharks will totally ignore the diver and continue to feed in their leisurely manner. Attempts to approach them in fast inflatables should be actively discouraged.
