Guideliner Photography Enthusiast Trips in 2009

Wildlife, flowers and great landscapes make wonderful photographic subjects and of course we get many photography enthusiasts joining us on existing trips. Now especially for the keen photographers amongst you we are introducing 2 enthusiast weeks for the season of 2009. The weeks are May 17th - 22nd and September 6th - 11th. We intend to take you spectacular locations where you can unleash your creative and compositional skills .

We'll have Chris Mason on board for both these trips. Chris has been working as a commercial photographer based near York for the last 26 years and has been running his own business for the last 20 of these. www.cmphoto.co.uk . Chris has a built up a wealth of experience as a working photographer and enjoys passing on his skills, knowledge and tips and tricks to anyone who wants to listen. He has had various spells at York and Ripon Colleges' during the last 15 years as a part time lecturer. Chris will work with our guests in an informal way and tailor his advice to the level and proficiency of the guests.
Proposed Itinery – having been onboard for a ‘recce’ week in 2008. We have put together a rough itinery for the weeks in 2009; of course this is subject to modification due to changing weather conditions and other circumstances. During the May week we’ll still be benefiting from the beautiful show of spring flowers so we’ll have many opportunities to sharpen our macro and flora photography abilities.   Of course on the Islands such as Lunga (Treshnish Isles) the birds – Puffins, Shags and Razorbills will be busy nesting and bringing up their young. During the September week, we’ll be able to take advantage of the spread of the Autumn colours especially in the heavily wooded Loch Aline area.   On both these weeks we’ll have at least three full photography days if possible and two more broken days due to travelling. We’ll try to structure the days so that you get out and about with your cameras at the start and end of the days when the ‘light quality’ is at its best.

Day 1 will be based in the head of Loch Aline, where along with the chance to take great views you’ll also be able to get to grips with close up (macro) photography and wildlife (mainly wading and shore birds) from the purpose built hide.

Day 2 Or thereabouts we’ll head for Lunga one of the Treshnish Isles, where you can get really close to the birds - Puffins, Razorbills, Shags etc. You’ll need a long lens and big capacity memory card, because getting good shots of the Puffins in flight can be a bit like a ‘Turkey Shoot’. There are also opportunities to get some lovely coastal and general landscape shots here.

Day 3
Or thereabouts we’ll spend on The Isle of Ulva. We will disembark at the little harbour at Ulva hamlet. Here you’ll have all sorts of photo opportunities nearby, from the small boats, buildings and fishing equipment in the immediate location of the village to wonderful views across to Mull. There is also a small bay full of laid up and disintegrating fishing boats nearby, which will give you allsorts of possibilities to ‘play’ with ‘light, texture and pattern’. Further along the coast (for those prepared to walk and carry there equipment a few miles), are some wonderful basalt stacks on the coast and some deserted villages. This will be a long day packed with subject material.

Days 4 and 5 Will still have photography possibilities maybe at Dorlin, Coll, Loch Spelve (Mull) or on the Garvalach Isles, but will also be broken up by travelling on Guideliner. But remember to keep your cameras at the ready whilst on Guideliner as this is when you’ll get your best chances of photographing Dolphins, Porpoises and Whales.

In the evening we’ll have a half hour or so ‘critiquing’ each others ‘shots of the day’ on the ships flat screen monitor linked to a laptop. We’ll also spend a little time working on your ‘photo editing techniques’ covering areas such as colour enhancement, saturation, cropping, cloning, conversion to black and white etc and anything that you may want to ask of Chris.

What standard of photographer do I need to be?
These trips are tailored for guests with a high end pro-sumer camera with a 12X optical zoom (or thereabouts) and those of you with an SLR kit including a couple of lenses wide angle and telephoto. So these trips would not really suit those of you with a compact camera. An understanding of image file types and manual exposure control would be an advantage.

And what equipment should I have?

You’ll need the following
1) A digital or film SLR camera with a couple of lenses or more.
2) Or a high end pro-sumer camera with a long optical zoom and a wide angle and telephoto adaptor if possible.
3) A few filters if possible including graduated ND and Polarising filters.
4) A monopod or tripod.
5) Lots of memory cards or lots of rolls of film.
6) Spare batteries and chargers.
7) A Kit bag / rucksack for your kit especially when disembarking from Guideliner.
8) A laptop could be useful but not essential.
9) Insurance for Kit just in-case it gets dropped in the briny.
10) Stout walking shoes / boots and waterproofs.
