Muck

Early morning views from the island can be stunning - these are common seals resting
on a reef at Galanach Bay with Eigg and the mainland behind.

Seen from the top of the Sgurr of Eigg, Muck shows itself as a small island, but however manages to pack san awful lot of interesting things into such a small area.

The main village is Port Mhor, seen here with the boat the "Wave" which used to bring goods and people off the ferry before the new pier was built in 2004.

The island itself is a thriving farming community, despite the obvious difficulties with getting produce and livestock to market.

Muck has always been well known for the warmer than average for the islands. Crops grow here earlier than elsewhere - arable cultivation is quite unusual in the Hebrides

The owner of the island, Lawrence MacEwan, lives at Gallanach Bay on the north west of the island. This is the nicest anchorage, but is very exposed to winds and swell so cannot be used on every visit.

The bay is surrounded by beautiful green fields leading up to the summit of Beinn Airein (137metres) from which wonderful views of the islands are to be had

You can just make out Guideliner anchored in the bay below.

Surrounding the bay are several lovely cottages, some lived in all year and some for rent.

Perhaps the most unusual is the turf roofed cottage, which is some half a mile from Gallanach. It stands alone, above a wonderful shell and rock bay in perfect seclusion, and is available for short term rent for those who can make do with some very basic but fabulous accommodation.

You can get lovely home cooked food, (I especially recommend the cream cakes) at the cafe at Port Mhor, which is also the Community centre, but you may have to join the queue!

However the island has its more rugged side - here you can see the cliffs of Rubh Leam na Laraich on the south of Muck.

But one things seems to be so noticeable on the island.
On Muck the weather can be so much kinder than on the islands around.
